Regular Maintenance
With today's advances in wood flooring stains and finishes, cleaning your wood floors has never been easier. Regular maintenance requires little more than sweeping with a soft bristle broom, and vacuuming with a soft floor attachment (do not vacuum with the beater bar on). You should clean your floors periodically with a professional wood floor cleaner such as Bona-Kemi (Bona-X) or dry Swiffers as well.
Preventive Maintenance
Do not use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors. Self-polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly.
Use throw rugs both inside and outside doorways to help prevent grit, dirt and other debris from being tracked onto your wood floors. This will prevent scratching.
Do not wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue.
Wipe up spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel.
Do not use wax or oil products on urethane-finished floors.
Put felt-faced or plastic glides under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching.
Avoid walking on your wood floors with cleats, sports shoes and high heels in disrepair. These can scratch the finish, or even dent your floor.
When moving furniture, do not slide it on wood flooring. It is best to pick up the furniture completely to protect the wood flooring.
For wood flooring in the kitchen, place an area rug in front of the kitchen sink and the stove.
Use a humidifier throughout the winter months to keep wood movement and shrinkage to a minimum. You can have this system installed with your HVAC.

Wood flooring, whether engineered or solid, may be adversely affected by too little or too much moisture, humidity, or even high and low temperatures. Like plants in your garden, wood floors enjoy a consistency in both humidity and temperature. Without this consistency, expansion, shrinkage, cupping and buckling may occur. It can take several months for a floor to become completely acclimated to its new environment.
The sanding of wood will create fine dust that can be quite invasive. When it's time to refinish your hardwood floor, don't turn your home into a dust bowl. Our dust-free sanding system is the most advanced and powerful dust containment system available. It evacuates airborne dust and carcinogens and collects it all outside of your home, leaving only a cleaner and healthier environment behind.
We use environmentally safe products to refinish your floors. With no hazardous toxic fumes, you don't have to move out of the house during refinishing. As the finish dries, water (not toxic solvents) evaporates in to the air, leaving only the protective polyurethane coating on the wood floor.
We work with the finest natural wood species from around the world, from Walnut and Brazilian Cherry to Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Santos Mahogany, Hickory and many other natural wood species. Timberline Hardwood Floors has them all.
